I might sound biased but the Ford f150 is by far one of the best pickup trucks on the market (if not the best) and the EcoBoost engine option has only added more by providing a boost in fuel efficiency.

In this article, I am going to share with you some of the ways to improve your Miles per Gallon based on my experience as an Ex-Ford Tech. Let’s get to it.

F150 Ecoboost Average Miles Per Gallon

Let’s first look at the F150 Ecoboost’s overall fuel economy.

Ford claims that the truck can get 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway, for a combined average of 20 mpg.

After driving this truck for a few months and speaking with some of the F150 EcoBoost owners, my experience is that it’s closer to 16-18 mpg city and 22-24 mpg highway.

This is relatively respectable for a truck that weighs this much, but there are a few ways to improve those numbers.

Here are some of the things you can do to improve the average miles per gallon for your Pickup

1. Clean MAF Sensor:

From personal experience, I can tell you that the MAF Sensor is one of the most important parts of your truck.

It tells the engine how much air is being sucked into the intake, which in turn helps it determine how much fuel to inject into the cylinders.

If this sensor gets dirty, your Miles per Gallon will drop significantly. This is why it’s important to clean this sensor regularly and make sure that there are no blockages of any sort on it.

Cleaning the MAF Sensor on its own will show drastic improvement in the average MPG, you can expect a 1-3 mpg improvement.

2. Replace Spark Plugs:

When the spark plugs get old, they lose their ability to create an electric charge that ignites the fuel in your engine.

This means that you’ll be burning more gas than necessary, which is why it’s important to replace your spark plugs on a regular basis (Ford recommends changing plugs every 30 000 miles).

A simple way to check if your spark plugs are working properly is by simply taking off one of them and looking at how burnt the spark plug is.

3. Change Air Filter:

The Air filter in your F-150 is a pretty important part of your truck, and if it’s clogged up with dust and debris, your engine will have to work harder to breathe. This means that you’ll be burning more gas than necessary, which is why it’s important to change your air filter on a regular basis. According to PG filters, air filters can impact gas mileage by as much as 10%.

It is recommended that you change the air filter of your F150 EcoBoost every 15 000 – 30 000 miles.

4. Make Sure Your Tires are Properly Inflated:

While this may not seem like a huge deal, the wrong pressure in your tires can have a significant impact on gas mileage.

If your tires are under-inflated, they will be harder to roll over and will require more power from your engine to make them move.

Over-inflated tires also cause more friction between them and the road surface which also uses up more gas than necessary.

5. Limit Idling Time:

Another good way to improve your F150 EcoBoost’s gas mileage is to limit the time that you idle. Idling uses a lot of fuel, So I recommend completely switching off the engine instead of letting it idle for long periods of time.

6. Use Cruise Control:

If you are driving on the highway and able to set your speed using cruise control, do so!

using cruise control on the highway is proven to save fuel by up to 20% because it keeps your F150 going at a constant speed rather than accelerating and decelerating for every hill or bend in the road.

7. Remove Excess Weight:

If you are carrying extra weight on the back of your F150, consider removing it.

The extra weight on the back affects how much fuel your truck uses because more weight requires more power to move.

When not in use, I would advise you to remove items like spare tires, camping equipment, and other heavy objects. The more weight you carry, the more gas it takes to get your truck moving.

Is higher octane gas better in EcoBoost?

The answer is yes, higher octane gas is better in EcoBoost. When you fill up your tank with higher octane gas, the fuel is more effective at reducing engine knock or pinging, there is also a slight improvement in performance and fuel economy.
